Since gold does not oxidize at normal temperatures, it retains its conductivity and solderability. Even at very thin layers, these properties can be passed on to any plated surface, which makes gold plating highly desirable in the electronics industry where contact resistance, solderability and wire bonding are crucial.

A gold-cobalt alloy has dramatically increased hardness and wear, making this type of plating ideal for applications that require a great deal of handling. At Quality Plating Ltd, all our finishes go through an electro cleaning and electroplating process and can come with either a polish or satin finish.

Benefits of Gold Plating

Gold is frequently used for plating because of its inherent properties. In addition to a beautiful look, gold offers corrosion resistance and desirable conductivity.

How does this benefit you? It all depends on why you are plating your object. Are you looking to protect it from the elements? Gold doesn’t oxidize, which means that it is impervious to moisture and high temperatures.

Gold also has excellent electrical conductivity. This makes it a vital metal for the electronics industry. When the passage of electrical current causes an object’s components to heat up, some metals will melt. Gold, however, remains unaffected, due to its heat-resistant properties.

Furthermore, gold is malleable. As a result, it is easy to deposit very thin layers of gold over metals such as nickel, making the entire structure more durable. And finally, gold is a highly valuable metal, and even a thin veneer of gold on your object will instantly increase its price tag in case of resale.

Types of Gold Plating

At Quality Plating Ltd, we offer a wide variety of gold plating services, each with their own practical application.

For instance, soft pure gold plating can be used for wire bonding and circuit boards since it is highly conductive. Bright hard gold, on the other hand, contains a lower concentration of gold and usually incorporates nickel or cobalt. These metals interfere with die bonding and therefore make bright hard gold useless as a conductor. It can, however, be used for printed circuit board tabs and edge connectors.

Gold plating services can also be distinguished by classes of chemistry. The four classes are

  • Alkaline gold cyanide
  • Neutral gold cyanide
  • Acid gold plating
  • and Non-cyanide (sulfite or chloride-based)

Our experts will be happy to explain the difference should you be interested. Call now for details!
